IV Certification Classes in Orange County
In California, healthcare professionals have the opportunity to enhance their skills and broaden their career opportunities through various certifications. Two such certifications are the Intravenous (IV) Therapy and Blood Withdrawal Certification and the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) I license. Here, we will discuss the state requirements for these two certifications.
IV Certification
The IV Therapy and Blood Withdrawal Certification is designed for Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) in California1. The course covers IV therapy, arterial puncture, and blood withdrawal1. The course is a 36-hour course consisting of 27 hours of lecture and nine hours of clinical experience1. LVNs who complete the course will be certified by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technician Examiners to initiate and superimpose intravenous fluids and blood withdrawal1.
The qualifying professional must fulfill one of two requirements within the last five years: They need at least six months of experience starting and superimposing intravenous fluids in an “organized health care system,” as defined in Section 2860.5 © (2), or they must have experience teaching courses in intravenous therapy or blood withdrawals2.
Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I) License
AHC's that teaches healthcare professionals how to safely and effectively perform skin puncture and venipuncture blood collection3. There are different requirements for applicants with no phlebotomy experience, applicants with less than 1040 hours of on-the-job phlebotomy experience, and applicants with 1040 or more hours of on-the-job phlebotomy experience in the last 5 years3.
Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I) students complete at least 40 hours of didactic classroom training and 40 hours of practical training at a minimum of 10 skin punctures and 50 venipunctures and observe arterial punctures. A training program must provide a certificate of completion to each student who successfully completes the program.
